Here’s a selection of my favourite qualifying laps for the ‘91 Bathurst, first up is the late, great Peter Brock wrangling a VN Commodore around the mountain for a respectable time.

The Group A Commodores of the era were running a 421kw (565 bhp) 4.9L V8 in racing trim, and were still very much rear wheel drive.
1991 was the return of Brock back into the Holden fold after spending several seasons driving Sierra RS500’s.

Next up we have Dick Johnson in the dominant Ford Sierra RS500, I had tried to find the lap from the often underrated Glenn Seton who beat this time by 1.141 seconds.
The 1991 Sierra Cosworth’s were a turbocharged 2.0L Pinto engine pushing upwards of 590hp through relatively narrow rear tires. They were dominant in Group A touring car championships across the world, and Bathurst was no exception.

and finally, the Gibson Motorsport prepared Nissan R32 GT-R, somewhere around 600hp to all four wheels, driven by a relatively young-at-the-time Mark Skaife.

Not much needs to be said, the Group A R32 GT-R’s were all but unbeatable at the time. See for yourself, and I hope you enjoy :)

I can’t watch old Bathurst races without tears and even modern ones. Too much feels for a softie I thinks
